What are terpenes?
Terpenes are oils produced by plants naturally, not just cannabis. These oils are very volatile and can begin evaporating at room temperature. Terpenes are so volatile that this just might explain why the morning air feels like it is more fresh before the sun rises and begins to burn off natural terpenes. They are what give plants their distinct smell and flavor. The term terpene is derived from the Greek word “turpentine” which means “resin from a tree”. Terpenes have been used for centuries for medical and spiritual purposes, specifically in aromatherapy. Terpenes are also found in other plants like citrus fruits, pine trees, and lavender flowers. These are what contribute to each living organisms pigment and odor. There are over 200 terpenes found in nature, but only a handful of them play an important role in the cannabis world. Terpenes have many different uses for humans as well as other animals or insects that may interact with them. According to studies, humans can experience benefits as small as euphoria and mood boosting all the way to anti-inflammation and cancer fighting properties. For animals and insects they can be used to deter pests or attract pollinators to the plant they come from. Large amounts of terpenes may not be friendly with your house pets though. Always use diluted terpenes or essential oils in the presence of pets for their safety!
